The Policy Fellow for Mental Health at Texans Care for Children is responsible for advancing policies that improve access to quality mental health services for children and families. To meet this responsibility, the Fellow, in partnership with the Director of Health Policy and members of the health policy team, will undertake policy analysis, draft policy briefs and outreach materials, participate in coalition meetings, and advocate during the 89th Texas legislative session. This is a full-time, two-year fellowship from August 2024 to July 2026.

The Hogg Policy Academy Director will lead the grant-funded Hogg Foundation Mental Health Policy Academy. In this role, the Hogg Policy Academy Director is responsible for executing the two-year Policy Academy including planning, coordinating, and facilitating Academy programming for the 24-person cohort of policy fellows, peer policy fellows, and their mentors. Academy activities include an orientation, monthly meetings, social events, community site visits, skill-building workshops, and a federal policy experience in Washington D.C.

The Senior Policy Associate for Early Learning will play a leading role in the organization’s advocacy efforts to ensure children have access to high-quality pre-k and other early learning programs that help them start school ready to succeed. The Senior Policy Associate will be responsible for policy research, data analysis, policy development, and executing advocacy strategies to ensure children of all backgrounds, including emergent bilingual students and students with disabilities, receive the early learning experiences they need. The Senior Policy Associate will report to the Director of Early Learning Policy. The position is full-time and based in Austin in a hybrid work environment.

The Senior Policy Associate for Child Protection will play a leading role in the organization’s advocacy efforts to keep children safe and out of foster care and help children in foster care heal and thrive. The Senior Policy Associate will be responsible for policy research, data analysis, policy development, and executing advocacy strategies to improve the Texas child protection system and ensure families can access the mental health services and other supports they and their children need to stay safely together. The Senior Policy Associate will report to the Director of Child Protection Policy. The position is full-time and based in Austin in a hybrid work environment.

Intern and Fellowship Program

Texans Care for Children created its Intern and Fellowship Program to provide valuable policy experience to applicants of all educational, cultural and systems involvement backgrounds. Our organization believes exposure to advocacy work prepares the individual for any future career path they choose to pursue and helps create a better Texas for all children and families to call home.

Goals of Intern and Fellowship Programs:
  • Provide interns and fellows with appropriate, meaningful work that enriches our mission to drive policy change to improve the lives of Texas children;
  • Improve the pipeline of underrepresented Texans in professional policy positions; and
  • Provide underrepresented Texans with policy experiences and skills that will strengthen their ability to support their respective communities while improving our state for all Texas children.
