Between now and the end of February, Texans have a great opportunity to share their perspective on the state’s child care scholarships and other services managed by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).
Every two years, the Texas Legislature takes up “Sunset” legislation to update and renew a handful of state agencies. As we explained on our website last year, TWC is one of the state agencies on the schedule for the 2027 session. To prepare for the legislative session, the staff at the Sunset Advisory Commission is analyzing TWC and will prepare recommendations to lawmakers.
The Sunset Advisory Commission is currently accepting public input regarding TWC to help shape their analysis and recommendations. This is an opportunity to highlight what works and what doesn’t, suggest improvements, and influence the way state leaders retool the agency and the programs they support.
For example:
- If your family received a child care scholarship, how was the eligibility approval and the enrollment process for your child? Are there ways to make the process more efficient?
- If you are a child care provider, are there improvements to TWC’s support or oversight of child care programs that you would like to continue, or areas for improvement?
- If you are an advocate or other stakeholder, what bureaucratic challenges, inefficiencies, or other burdens are you hearing about and seeing in your community?
We are preparing our input, which will include recommendations to establish a coordinated intake and referral system, review the effectiveness of initiatives supported with federal child care funds, improve support for children with disabilities, and more.
If you would like to share your views on the future of TWC with Sunset staff, you can submit them here by the end of February. Here’s additional information on the process.
Thank you for raising your voice to ensure that Texas supports children, families, and child care providers!
