Advocates Call on Legislature to Continue Investing in Child Care Scholarships

Austin – State leaders recently announced they are cutting the number of families in Texas who will receive child care scholarships that allow them to go to work and find high-quality child care for their kids. The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) is reducing the number of families it can serve from 146,736 this year to 132,689 in 2027.

“We’re deeply concerned that Texas is cutting child care while parents are already dealing with soaring prices on groceries, gas, child care, and other essentials,” said Max Rombado, Director of Early Learning Policy at Texans Care for Children. “These child care scholarships have been a huge success, helping parents go to work and ensure their toddlers are in safe, nurturing child care. The Legislature came through last year with a bipartisan investment in child care, and we urge lawmakers to step up again and support child care.”

During the 2025 legislative session, a bipartisan coalition of Rep. Armando Walle, House Speaker Dustin Burrows, Senator Joan Huffman, and others invested an additional $100 million in child care scholarships in order to reach more families.

“No Texas parent should have to quit their job because they can’t find affordable, safe child care,” said Mr. Rombado. “We urge the Texas Workforce Commission to ask the Legislature for the funding it needs to preserve current child care slots and serve additional families.”
