We're pleased to invite you to join us on Tuesday, September 11th at 10:00 am in Austin for our next Children's Policy Series panel discussion, The Path Forward for Texas Pre-k: Next Steps for Policymakers, Advocates, and Communities.
For many years in Texas, there has been strong bipartisan recognition of the importance of pre-k and support for strengthening it. Unfortunately, pre-k took a step backwards last year when the Legislature eliminated funding for the High-Quality Prekindergarten Grant Program that it established in 2015. Nonetheless, momentum is starting to build for pre-k once again. In particular, the hearings of the Texas Commission on Public School Finance have featured numerous discussions about early childhood education and the importance of full-day high-quality pre-k.
In light of this momentum, we are gathering experts on September 11th to discuss the state of Texas pre-k and how policymakers, advocates, and communities can strengthen our pre-k policies to ensure more Texas children start kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed.
We will explore the status of the Commission’s work and the role it may play in the fight for more state pre-k funding. We will hear the state and district perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing communities, including the effect of the Legislature’s decision to cut the grant funding. We will bring forward the business perspective, including how business leaders can further engage in this debate and what quality early childhood education means to the Texas economy. We will set the stage for the next frontier in pre-k advocacy, including laying out our goals and discussing the path to success.
David Feigen, our Early Childhood Policy Associate, will moderate the panel. The following panelists have been confirmed:
- The Honorable Diego Bernal, State Representative, House District 123
- Jacquie Porter, Early Childhood Director, Texas Education Agency
- Derek Little, Assistant Superintendent of Early Learning, Dallas ISD, and
