Heartbroken, Outraged, and Committed to a Better Future for Our Kids

We are truly heartbroken and outraged by the killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery and other recent acts of racism and violence by law enforcement and other Americans.

These tragedies are a painful reminder of the reality faced by Black people and other people of color in our communities.

They are also a reminder of the responsibility that Texans Care for Children has — to listen better; elevate the voices of individuals with lived experience and organizations representing communities of color; address systemic racism and implicit bias; and overcome the racial inequities that hurt children, families, and others across Texas and our country.

As an organization, we aspire to do a better job of fulfilling that responsibility. We’ve been fighting for state policies that address inequities in the education, health, child welfare, and youth justice systems that traumatize and affect the well-being of children of color. We have so much more work to do to address inequities and reform the systems that perpetuate structural racism. We’re grateful for all who are leading and contributing to these efforts.

We seek a future where each and every child can be safe, healthy, and thrive. Where children grow up feeling loved and respected for who they are. Where all children have bright futures no matter their zip code or the color of their skin.

We commit to working with our partners to call out injustice now, push for public policies that make lasting, positive change, and model anti-racist behavior ourselves. Our children are watching and listening.
