Mental Health Services for Juveniles in the Justice System

Testimony to the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee

Youth with mental health concerns receive services from multiple systems in Texas, but in an uncoordinated, fragmented, and costly way.

Numerous Texas agencies provide mental health services to children and youth: Department of State Health Services; Health and Human Services Commission; Department of Family and Protective Services; Texas Department of Juvenile Justice; Texas Correctional Office on Offenders with Medical or Mental Impairments; Texas Education Agency; Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services; and Department of Aging and Disability.
