Wednesday, July 7 is Call-In Day for Juvenile Justice - 6/30/2010 -
|

|
Call your Congressional representatives about making juvenile justice a priority this year!
What Is Happening:
The U.S. Congress has three important opportunities before it right now to improve our nation's juvenile justice systems, so more youth succeed and fewer crimes occur. After waiting more than three years toreauthorize the nation's Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act, however, Congress is stalling.Time is running out,and members of Congress need to hear from you that this legislation (already passed out of Senate committee) is a priority this year. Congress also needs toincrease federal juvenile justice appropriations, so states can continue to save taxpayer money by implementing best practices for youth, andpass the Youth PROMISE Act, which promotes proven, prevention-based strategies to reduce youth crime.
Why It Matters:
This year we must move juvenile justice away from discredited "tough on crime" laws that are bad for youth and don't prevent crime, and instead move toward strategies that work. First, though, Congress needs to hear from you that this issue matters. ACT 4 Juvenile Justice has a document with key reasons for supporting action that you can use when calling your senators and U.S. Representative.
What You Can Do:On July 7th, contact Senators Cornyn and Hutchison and your U.S. House Representative andask them to make juvenile justice a priority in the 111th Congressby:
- Reauthorizing the JJDPA;
- Increasing juvenile justice appropriations; and
- Passing the Youth PROMISE Act.
